Captain Paolo Maldini talked at Milanello today and made an analysis of the team's moment after the victory against Atalanta and ahead of the two away games before the break.

MILANELLO - Here are the declarations made by captain Paolo Maldini, exclusively to Milan Channel's microphones, before the afternoon training session today at Milanello:

Paolo, yesterday a complete working week started which brings Milan to two away games after Sunday's important victory against Atalanta.
"Yes, it was an important victory both for the morale and the table also because last week was very special because of the travel involved for the friendly in Qatar. We were worried about the match against Atalanta, fortunately we managed to win. Now we are able to train well and face these two away games which will both be delicate for different reasons: Siena are a team who have made it difficult for many teams at home and Napoli become a very dangerous team again after the coaching change.
From now until the end of the season it will be important to maintain our balance toward the top of the table until the end, trying to get good results both at home and away because we have to maintain consistency in our results without differences between home and away games."

Has the elimination from the Uefa Cup been archived?
"Yes, now we only think about the league. We have the chance to train the whole week which is a great advantage. Certainly the Uefa Cup elimination remains heavy and difficult to digest, but the same way we turned the page after winning, we also have to do it after losing, so let's not think about the past and try to look to the future which sees us in a good position in the table."

Against Werder Bremen it was your last match in Europe.
"Yes, last year the last one in the Champions League and this year the last in Europe in general, the important thing is to be serene and I am."

This season there have been quite a few injuries.
"The injuries have hit fundamental players for our play and for their quality. It's been a difficult season, let's hope the trend changes because instead of getting back players we often lose someone: also yesterday Beckham suffered this ankle injury, let's hope it's nothing serious. We hope, in any case, to get back some injured players for Sunday."

How did you see Beckham as a playmaker?
"He did well, he also has to adapt, it's not easy. He has the right spirit, he is someone who always gives his best, he has played in various positions and it's normal he has to find the right distances."

Yesterday Adriano Galliani has said that in Italy there are more injuries because there are too many games.
"You'd have to go into details, I saw that also Arsenal had their most important players out for long stretches, and also Chelsea had injury problems. Some seasons are difficult. The top teams that participated to the Champions League and the Uefa Cup have a high number of injuries. It's a research that should be done over more seasons and perhaps in different countries."

Is there something or someone who could make you change your mind about quitting at the end of the season?
"No, the decision has been made calmly and I certainly won't turn back."

Our captain left Europe. Disappointed for the elimination, but with his head held high for his history and his performance. The numbers and past results are of the highest level.

MILAN - Paolo Maldini debuted on the international scene with Milan's shirt almost 24 years ago. It was September 18 1985, Milan were facing Auxerre in France, in the Uefa Cup. The defensive line was made up of Tassotti, Filippo Galli, Franco Baresi and the same Paolo. The French side won 3-1, but in the second leg, always with Maldini on the pitch, the Rossoneri's team qualified thanks to a 3-0 win at San Siro.

From that double clash until today, Paolo Maldini has the following record: 139 in the Champions Cup/Champions League, 22 in the Uefa Cup and 7 in the European Super Cup. Apart from 7 games in the Interncontinental Cup. In total 168 official games with the Milan shirt in the European cups and 7 games in world scene in the Fifa competition.

Something unique, extraordinary, unrepeatable. Last night the last act, against Werder Bremen in the Uefa Cup. This second part of the Rossoneri's season contains inside a series of 'last times' of the captain and putting them together one after another can appear repetetive, but an international parable like the one of Paolo Maldini cannot be accompanied with all the honours. To have a career like mine you have to be lucky not to get injuries. In any case my physique is starting to creak and this is my last season, because after this season I don't think my body would allow me to play at the highest level."

The theme is Werder-Milan of tomorrow night: "It's a challenge - the Captain said - "which is played in the Uefa Cup but which is absolutely worthy of the Champions League considering the value of the two teams. Compared to the first Werder-Milan of 1989 a lot of time has passed, I remember clearly that the current coach Carlo Ancelotti was my team mate. I scored against Werder five years later, in 1994, also in the Champions League but at San Siro."

MILAN - This afternoon, just before the afternoon training, Paolo Maldini answered a question from Milan Channel on his eventual return to the national team for one last match: "Yes, I would like that. It would not be an actual return to the national team, but a chance to celebrate a long career with the Azzurri shirt, that's why I would like it."

PAOLO MALDINI: "The Azzurri calendar is still very full"

MILAN - The Milan captain continued: "It's something that came spontaneously, I did not know anything about it, if and when I will participate to this match is a decision that should be made by someone else, also considering that the calendar is very full and that coach Lippi has to take into consideration first of all the team's needs."

MILAN - Paolo Maldini experienced his last Christmas and is about to experience his last New Year's Eve as a footballer. After that, it's not yet known what will happen. But for now, he doesn't think about it, even though he is starting to realise that his brilliant and enviable career as a protagonist in football will be finished in June. In his interview to Milan Channel, the captain recapped this 2008, talking about himself, the team, the league, the Uefa Cup, and the new arrivals at Milan. Here are some of the things said by the number 3.

Paolo, how can you recap the year 2008 which is about to end?
"At a personal level I am happy about how I lived this year. I managed to play with continuity without feeling pain to my knees, I did not undergo operations like I had done in the previous two years and so I was practically always with my team mates. At team level, certainly the summer friendlies did not go well. We recovered, and had a long series of useful results and good performances, and then decreased a little. But it can happen."

During your career you have seen a lot. The lesson has been "never give up." Does that also hold for this season?
"Absolutely. In 1999 we won a Scudetto that seemed lost. The situation was desperate, but with our desire and a few missteps of our opponents we did it. It would be absurd to think now that the league is finished and that there is no chance of catching Inter. This team has to play always thinking that it's destined to fight until the end, even though this did not happen in the last two seasons."

How much and in what way were you surprised by Ronaldinho?
"I did not know him. He has a positive image because, aside from his undisputable technical qualities, he never gets into trouble on the pitch. Off the pitch, however, people said certain things about him, but when there are contrasts between a club and a player, sometimes things come out that aren't true. I see a likeable and well-integrated player."

And here he found a different kind of preparation which allowed him to improve his condition. Physical and characteristic differences that also exist between Milan and Inter...
"Yes, they are more powerful and strong, we have other qualities. It's normal that you train the characteristics you think are necessary to win leagues or cups."

What can you tell us about the Uefa Cup?
"Until now it's been important because it gave a chance to the less utilised players in the league to show themselves. It's a new competition, which is entering its crucial phase and which will be similar to the Champions League, also for the value of the opponents."

Is there a player who arrived last summer that impressed you more than others?
"Borriello. When he came in he has always done well. Until now he's been a bit unlucky. He undoubtedly has characteristics which are fundamental to us and which no other player in our squad has this season. I think he could be a reference point during the remainder of the season."

At the ceremony which was held in the Buzzatti hall, there were Adriano Galliani, Coni president Gianni Petrucci, Federcalcio president Giancarlo Abete, Lega president Antonio Matarrese and Massimo Moratti. These are the declarations of the Rossoneri’s captain:

ON THE AWARD RECEIVED:
"It’s an award which gratifies me a lot, dedicated to an important personality of our football, an Inter and national team legend. Like all great players, Facchetti was an example for everyone who loved football, for what he gave on and off the pitch.”

ON THE INHERITANCE OF THE NUMBER 3 SHIRT
“This is something of which Adriano Galliani discussed personally with me and my wife. With regards to our children, we don’t want to pressure them also because my luck was that, despite having an important name, I did not have any pressure from my father or my mother. If my son will want to be a footballer, he could wear “my” number 3, why not…

“At Milan we have lived many beautiful stories, and therefore this could the seal of the relationship which exists between this club and my family.”

ON HIS CAREER AND HIS PHYSICAL CONDITION
“The injury I suffered two years ago could have closed my career in a brutal way, also because I still didn’t have the contract and I didn’t know how I would have recovered from such a serious injury. Luckily then everything was solved and this year I started the training with the squad unlike the previous years in which I had to undergo surgery at the end of the season. Consequently, I started later than my team-mates and I must say that from the physical condition, I feel much better than in the past.

“Right now my hope is that of updating my curriculum and my total victories. I still have a lot of will to enjoy this season until June, also because I'm living it serenely since the team is very strong.”

ON MILAN’S SEASON AND THE CURRENT SQUAD
“With regards to Milan, the sensation to be there, at the top positions of the standings, even though behind Inter or any other team, is surely nice, because the league has always been our objective and in the past years we had given up quite early. I don’t know how many teams will manage to remain at the top, but I think that Milan must candidate itself for this role of anti-Inter.

“Even the fact that Milan is in this league position, I think that it’s very important. Breathing the air of the high standings is beautiful after two years of abyssal distances. Therefore we are already happy about this. We know very well that the league will not be decided on November 2nd, neither Wednesday and probably not even in December, therefore we shall have to wait until the end. Each team has its own characteristics. This team is rich of talented champions, maybe we're not physical like we were in the recent past, but we have other characteristics. We are playing on this."

ON DAVID BECKHAM
“I don’t know the details of the agreement between Milan and David Bechkam. What I know is that he was and still is an important player, he chose Milan to remain in form. He did the same last year with Arsenal and he didn’t get all this attention back then. Milan has surely accentuated this thing, if then there will be the possibility to play with us, we will all be happy.  The Beckham issue was created as a request made by the player with regards to a training period he needs to do in order to be fine. If then other things will come, I think that for free it could be a good deal.”

ON HIS FUTURE
“I was asked if in my future I was sure if I wouldn’t become a coach and I told them yes, absolutely. I will not be a coach. It could be a choice tied to the club or to my personal life. There’s nothing certain.”

ON GILARDINO’S GOAL DURING PALERMO-FIORENTINA
“I saw the goal, but I didn’t follow the rest. The goal should have been clearly disallowed. These are moments in which each one of us reacts due to the situation, one should find himself in that context.”

MILAN - Paolo Maldini also wished his team mates in the Italian national team good luck ahead of the Euros: "My good luck wish goes to my team mates, but also to an environment I feel like my own, I have many friends among them. I think Italy can do very well. I'm sad about Fabio Cannavaro's injury, but Italy can still get the double after winning the World Cup."

ho sostenuto il milan da 14 anni, dalla coppa del mondo del 1994 in usa, sono cosi contenta di essere una tifosa rossonera, son stata sempre molto felice in ogni stagione. In Taiwan non abbiamo la possibilità di seguire una partita di calcio si serie A in tv, io devo vederla attraverso internet una partita del Milan. Lo scorso dicembre, finalmente ho avuto la possibilità di vedere in Giappone la finale della coppa del mondo FIFA.
sono cosi contenta di vederti tenere la coppa prima di andare via, è stato un giorno indimenticabile per me. Spero di vederti allenare molti giovani eccellenti calciatori per il futuro del Milan, saluti sinceri e che dio ti benedica, tanti auguri!
